As a graphic designer and art director, it’s not really my job to make things look beautiful or cool or cutting edge. My job is to solve problems. Problems such as how to make complex information easier to understand and navigate, how to communicate a concept more effectively or how to get someone to think more deeply about an issue or to persuade them to take some action. Whether it's an ad, a book jacket, a brochure or a web site interface, good design and good ideas solve problems.

I also believe that if the end result of the process is not beautiful or cool or cutting edge, then it's a good indication that the problem has not been solved effectively.

Although I've been doing this kind of work for 25+ years, I still get stoked by the challenge that each new project brings. I love it when I get the chance to solve a problem.
